Complete each sentence by choosing the correct ending from a list.
Match each sentence stem (1–4) with the correct ending (A–G) so the completed sentence reflects the passage.
The kakapo's main breeding adaptation is its dependence on rimu mast years. In years when the rimu tree fruits heavily — roughly every two to four seasons — kakapos breed prolifically. In intervening years they do not breed at all, conserving energy.
Complete: 'Kakapos depend on rimu mast years because…'
Matching Sentence Endings gives you incomplete sentences and a longer list of possible endings (e.g., 6 endings for 4 stems). Your job is to choose the ending that completes each sentence so it accurately reflects information in the passage. Critically, the questions are presented in the same order as the information appears in the passage, which is a major navigational advantage; use it. Start by reading all the sentence stems to understand the topics; then read the endings to get a sense of the distractors.
Predict, before scanning, what kind of ending each stem requires grammatically (a noun phrase, a verb phrase, a time clause). This eliminates options that do not fit the grammar of the stem. Now go to the passage and find the section corresponding to the first stem; read carefully and identify the idea, then return to the endings list to choose the best paraphrase. Distractors often use words from the passage but distort the meaning, so prioritise meaning over keyword overlap.
Cross out endings as you use them since each is used only once. If you cannot find a match, mark it and continue, then return to remaining options at the end; the order rule narrows where the answer can be. Spend about 60-75 seconds per question. Always re-read the completed sentence end-to-end to make sure it is grammatically correct and factually true according to the passage.
Beware of endings that are true in real life but not stated in the text: only what is in the passage counts.
Each correct match earns 1 mark out of 40 in the Reading section, with no partial credit and no negative marking, so always attempt every question. Answers are letters from the ending list, so spelling is irrelevant; just copy the letter accurately. Each ending is used only once unless the instructions say otherwise. Standard band conversion applies: roughly 30/40 = Band 7, 27/40 = Band 6.5, 23/40 = Band 6, and 15/40 around Band 5 on the Academic Reading scale.
